Replacing stove rope in 6 steps
- Let the stove cool down completely. Pull out the old rope and remove the glue residue with a chisel or screwdriver; brush the groove clean and degrease it with methylated spirit if needed.
- Measure the width of the groove, using the old rope as a reference. The new rope should fill the groove and be lightly compressed when the door is closed.
- Wrap a piece of finishing tape around the rope end so it does not fray, and cut it there.
- Apply a thin layer of stove adhesive (about 2 mm) to the bottom of the groove.
- Start in the middle of the bottom groove and press the rope into the adhesive without stretching it. Add about 1 cm and close the joint with finishing tape, leaving no gap between the ends.
- Close the door briefly to shape the rope, open it again and let the adhesive dry for 8 to 10 hours before lighting the stove.
Frequently asked questions
Is 2.5 m enough?
For the door of most domestic stoves and inset fires, yes. Measure the length of the groove; for larger doors use rope from a reel.
How often should stove rope be replaced?
Every two years or as soon as the rope is hard, flattened or frayed. Do the paper test: close the door on a strip of paper; if it pulls out without resistance, the door no longer seals. A leaking door draws in false air, so the stove regulates worse and burns more wood.
